3D Printer in Action

Slow Motion

We love this Slow-Mo clip of a silk PLA toy skull in mid-print!

A 3D Printer deposits melted filament layer by layer at amazing speeds.

The pace of this technology is moving so fast, it can be hard to keep up.

Slowing down the footage, we can see the nozzle and the precise path it follows. Machine by Creality, filament by Elegoo.

Normal Speed

Test print of a small prototype bracket. Machine by Qidi.

Printing small sections of parts first allows a quick test of the fit before dedicating to printing the entire part, which can often take 6 hours or more. Higher-grade engineering filament often takes longer to print due to it wanting to be printed at slower speeds. The printer in this video is using ASA filament, very robust and UV resistant, but hates feeling cold air and must be enclosed to prevent warping.

3D Printing Basic Filament Guide

PLA

PETG

PLA

PLA is a choice filament for pieces that stay indoors and away from high heat. PLA warps when left in hot vehicles, and it can degrade under constant UV exposure. That said, it is the perfect choice for items that are used indoors and do not need to withstand impacts or rough use.

ASA

PETG

PLA

ASA offers the same benefits of ABS with its durability, corrosion resistance, and heat tolerance. It also has the added benefit of withstanding harsh weather and UV. Items that stay wet, relatively hot, or exposed to UV are long lasting when printed in ASA.

PETG

PETG

PETG

PETG is closely related to PET and is commonly used for items that require heat, impact and solvent resistance. It is broadly used for retail and medical packaging, displays and electronic insulation. PETG is generally safe for use for food containers and bottles for drinks, overall making it a great choice for a broad range of long-lasting items.

PETG

ABS plastic is used in many common items, including automobiles, due to its impact and heat resistance. It is not nearly as UV resistant as ASA, but is extremely durable and will last a very long time.
